Unfortunately, we live in a culture that often rewards “curling” behaviors and quick fixes. But when we take over someone else’s responsibilities, we hinder their growth and learning. To create lasting change, we must instead encourage people to own their challenges and solutions.
Last week, I reached out to people I’ve supported in the past and asked what had helped them most. Their unanimous answer? I consistently placed the responsibility for their growth back on them.
For someone like me, who enjoys having control, this approach can be challenging. It’s far easier to provide answers than to ask the questions that lead to insights. However, sustainable growth only happens when individuals realize they have the power to change their own lives.
Helping others help themselves isn’t about solving their problems. It’s about fostering an environment where they discover their own answers. This is where skills in Motivational Interviewing become invaluable. It’s not a method but a relational approach that encourages growth and sustainable change.
Does your organization need to enhance its ability to unlock the best in people? Let’s connect and explore how we can make that happen!
Have a brilliant day!
